To promote food source sustainability, the City of Winnipeg is giving away free compost from June 1-7. Winnipeg residents will have the opportunity to take home up to 100 litres of compost per vehicle that they can use for their lawns, gardens, and plants, while quantities last.

All leaf and yard waste collected curbside from residents is taken to the Brady Road Resource Management Facility and turned into a nutrient-rich material called compost. This compost meets Category A standards under the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Guideline for Compost Quality, which is safe to use in all household applications, including vegetable gardens.

Compost is a natural fertilizer that promotes vegetation growth. For best results, it is recommended to mix one part of this compost with three parts soil.

Compost giveaway event details:

Date: June 1-7, 2020
Locations:

  • Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot , 1777 Brady Rd.
  • Kilcona Dog Park, west parking lot off McIvor Avenue (line up on Norris Road, south of McIvor Avenue)
  • Summit Road closed landfill site, Summit Road north of Optimist Park

Time: 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily, while compost quantities last

Note: This event is open to Winnipeg residents only. Residents must bring their own containers, shovels, and gloves. Shovels will not be provided for public use. There is a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle (approximately four 20-litre/5-gallon pails). To promote social distancing, only one vehicle will be allowed per compost pile at a time.
