Bike Week Winnipeg 2017

Orioles Bike Cage Open Shop – 10 am to 2 pm

Drop by Orioles Bike Cage to get some help, some repair advice, or use the shared tools. Volunteers will be on had to help you if you need.

Lord Roberts Community Centre Bike Rodeo – 12 to 3 pm

Come decorate your bike or make it roadworthy with help from the South Osborne Bike Hub (SOBH). SOBH will also be checking bikes for size, making seat adjustments, and pumping up tires. Manitoba Public Insurance will be there to set up an obstacle course to test your riding skills and the Winnipeg Police will be there teach kids all about the rules of the road.

We are also planning silly races, helmet decorating and prizes for all kinds of fun activities.

Everyone is welcome and its free! Just come to Lord Roberts CC, 725 Kylemore and join the fun.


Recumbent Bicycle Show and Shine – 3 pm

Always wanted to see some of those cool recumbent bikes up close? Head down to the Forks canopy for a show and shine of a wide variety of recumbent bikes and trikes by the Manitoba Recumbent Cyclists. If you’ve always had an interest in recumbents and want to check out many of the options, this is your chance. Talk to the owners and learn all about their special machines.

There will be a short group ride afterwards that you are sure to want to tag along and see these bikes in action. You don’t need to have a recumbent, just be willing to ride at a leisurely pace.

Ride the Parks & Trails of South St. Vital – 8 am

Join Bike Winnipeg director Denis De Pape on a leisurely bike ride through South St. Vital’s finest natural settings and most enjoyable trails. This 20 km ride will take you through and along the magical Bois-des-Esprits, Louis Riel Sr. Trail, Bishop Grandin Greenway, St. Vital Park, Henteleff Park and South St. Vital Trail.

Duration: about 1 hour and 45 minutes, expected finish around 10 am.
Meeting place: Henteleff Park Parking Lot (just south of The Waterfront, 1960 St. Mary’s Road)

Blessing of the Bikes – 10:30 a.m.

The first Blessing of the Bicycles was held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City in 1999. Our first Blessing of the Bikes in 2015 had more participants than the first one in NYC. Their event has since grown steadily and now has hundreds of people attending. We would like to see our Blessing of the Bikes grow as well.

Come out and get yourself and your bike blessed in this unique interfaith, non  sectarian service at Knox United / Central Park (right across from Central Park on Edmonton Street – north of Ellice). After the blessing you head over to The Forks for Community Bike Shop Day where you can get any of those minor bike issues attended to but mechanics from some of Winnipeg’s community bike shops.


Manitoba Recumbent Cyclists Poker Rally – Starts at 11 am

Starting at the Canopy – This is a casual no drop ride as you wind your way through the city picking up cards at various checkpoints. There will be prizes for the best hand. You don’t need to have a recumbent to ride along but its an opportunity to see these bikes in action.


Community Bike Shop Day – 12 – 4 pm

This is will be the 3rd annual Community Bike Shop Day at The Forks. A great chance to get that bike ready as we head into what will be a very busy Bike Week. The Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub (The W.R.E.N.C.H.) will be on hand along with South Osborne Bike Hub, Orioles Bike Cage, The U of W Bike Lab and La Coop Velo Citi to help you tune up and be ready to ride to all the great events planned throughout the week.

If you missed out on the City of Winnipeg Bike Auction this year and are still looking for a great refurbished bike, The WRENCH will also have some refurbished adult bikes for sale.

Finally we are planning to have our very popular reverse tie-dye station between 1:00-3:00 pm where we will show you how to imprint bike gears onto an article of clothing. You can purchase a Bike Week t-shirt for $10 to create your own design or you can just bring another shirt with you from home. Either way it is a chance to create your own one of a kind bike shirt.

Bike Thru Breakfast – 6:30 to 9:00 am

Come join Bike Week Winnipeg and our community partners for our annual “Bike Thru Breakfast.” Stop by any of at any of the following locations, grab a snack on your way to work and find out all about the great activities planned for the rest of the week. We’ll have a bike mechanic at each of the 4 locations to give your bike a quick check over and make minor adjustments as needed.

  • Downtown Winnipeg Biz – in McFayden Park on Assiniboine Avenue between Edmonton and Carleton
  • Exchange Biz – in Old Market Square
  • West Broadway BIZ – on Wolseley between Maryland and Sherbrook in front of the Misericordia Health Centre
  • Bike Week Winnipeg and the Downtown Winnipeg Biz – University of Winnipeg – On the south west corner of the campus along Portage.

Hot Cycle: Spin Class in Millennium Library Park – 12 -12:45pm

Take part in an outdoor Spin class at Millennium Library Park. Instructors from the YMCA will take you through a typical 45 minute class. Make sure to bring a water bottle. Hosted by the Downtown Biz and the YMCA Winnipeg (Downtown Branch)

UWSA Bike Lab Open Shop – 1 – 5:00 pm

Drop by the UWSA Bike Lab at the University of Winnipeg for some advise or basic bike repair needs. Volunteers will be on hand to help you.

Join MEC Winnipeg’s Ride Crew as they explore routes in and around the city, These rides are a great opportunity for introductory and intermediate cyclists to gain confidence riding in groups and making connections with other riders.

Easy Peasy Family Friendly Bike Path Ride – 6:30 pm departure

Join us at Woodcock Cycle 433 St Marys Rd to explore the AT infrastructure in south Winnipeg. This group ride will utilize our growing AT Network and will be geared to those who want to ride their bike at a relaxed conversational pace. This will be a fair-weather ride only, so everyone stays dry (we hope). Departure is a 6:30 pm sharp.

The route is 20  to 25 km long an we plan to be back at Woodcock between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. 20 to 25 kms sound like too much. No problem you can ride as far as you feel comfortable and then head back.

This is a no pressure, no-drop ride suited to those who wish to get more comfortable riding, want to  gradually increase their distance, or just want to ride with others in a casual setting. This ride is suitable for almost all types of bikes and riders.


2017 Bike Winnipeg Infrastructure Tour – 7:00 pm

Join Bike Winnipeg and Active Transportation Planner Erik Dickson on our 2017 Infrastructure Tour as we ride along and explain a sampling of the cycling infrastructure that’s sprouted up in Winnipeg over the past few years. Protected bike lanes are the theme for this year’s ride, which will take us through The Forks, into St. Boniface, down into South Osborne, and into West Broadway before making our way back to the Legislature.

Learn how and why some of our city’s cycling infrastructure has been developed, where gaps remain, and get an experts view on what we might see in future years.

Wednesday, June 21



 Bike Yoga in the Park – 12 noon-12:45pm, Millennium Library Park

Enjoy an outdoor yoga classes specifically designed to cater to the needs of those of us that ride bikes. The class will be taught by Diane a YMCA instructor and avid cyclist. Please bring your own mat. The event is hosted by Downtown Biz and YMCA Winnipeg (Downtown Branch)

Birds Hill, Biking and Beer – 4:30 pm starting at Air Canada Park

Ride a variety of different city bike routes from downtown to Birds Hill Park with the CEO of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, Stefano Grande. Head back for a cold beer at one of downtown’s outdoor patios. You can ride the whole approximately 50km route or shorten your ride and meet us back at the patio for a cold beer. Cost Free but bring a little cash to buy yourself a beer and a few nibbles.

Sage Creek Bike Week Celebration! – 6:30 – 8:30 pm

 GROUP RIDE

Teens and adults can join Orangetheory Fitness for a well-paced 15-20km bike ride through the Sage Creek trails and into surrounding neighbourhood trails. This ride is suitable for all levels, and get ready to get your heart rate going. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not mandatory. Pre-register by emailing [email protected].

Warm up starts at 6:55pm near the playground and Freshii. Ride departure @ 7:05pm

KIDS BIKE SAFETY RODEO

Manitoba Public Insurance will be running a Bike Rodeo suitable for kids aged 6 to 10 from 7-8pm. Kids will learn about rules of the road (signs, signaling and safety tips), helmet fit, bike fit and bike condition. Then they will practice riding skills, such as turning, braking, use of hand signals and recognizing road signs, on three different courses. All kids in the Rodeo have a chance to win prizes!

Pre-registration is encouraged, but not mandatory. Pre-register by emailing [email protected] with names of kids. Check-in/registration begins at 6:30 outside of Freshii, on Burning Glass Road.The bike rodeo starts at 7:00 pm

FREE HEALTHY SNACKS!

Freshii will be out and ready to energiize you with free food and drink samples from 6:30-8:30pm; and enter to win a $50 food voucher!



Bike Week Winnipeg Art Ride – 7:00 pm

Join Bike Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Arts Council on an informative ride and get to know the artwork that punctuates and brightens your city! The Bike Week Winnipeg ArtRide will take us from Furby Park in the West End out to The Maples before heading back to the U of W. Along the way we’ll learn about:

  • Elwick Community Centre

  • Table of Contents
